Prosecutor allows Tymoshenko to visit Brussels

Last week the European People’s Party and former US presidential candidate and Senator, John McCain issued a joint statement calling for the ban on Tymoshenko’s travel to be lifted.

The Prosecutor General’s Office website reported on Wednesday that its Investigator into Particularly Important Cases has given Yulia Tymoshenko, former Prime Minister and leader of the main opposition faction in the Verkhovna Rada, permission to travel to Brussels.  The report states that Ms Tymoshenko asked the Investigator to allow her to attend the summit of the European People’s Party in Brussels from 23-25 March, and the International Democracy Forum in Lithuania on 30 June.

A decision regarding the Lithuanian trip will be taken closer to the date, the report says.

As reported, serious concerns have been expressed both within Ukraine and abroad over what appears to be selective application of the law.  Last week the European People’s Party and former US presidential candidate and Senator, John McCain issued a joint statement calling for the ban on Tymoshenko’s travel to be lifted.
