Court orders Prosecutor to investigate convicted prisoner’s allegations

A Dnipropetrovsk court on Monday found the Deputy Prosecutor’s failure to act unlawful and ordered the Prosecutor’s Office to to register in the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations allegations of violations made by Andriy Kalytka, who is serving a 12 years imprisonment.

The information was provided by journalist and human rights worker Serhiy Dovhal who added that before this Kalytka’s lawyers and relatives had on a number of occasions submitted reports to the Prosecutor’s Office. They alleged that a crime had been committed in prosecuting a man they knew to be innocent and sentencing him to 12 years. One of the reports was signed by six prominent journalists in Dnipropetrovsk.

Serhiy Dovhal says that Kalytka;s lawyers have in addition managed to get a review of Kalytka’s case, as well as that of Yevhen Lazarev, sentenced over the same case to 8 years imprisonment in the High Specialized Court in Civil and Criminal Matters

Both men have been imprisoned now for over 4 years.

28-year-old Andry Kalytka and his friend were found guilty of a robbery attack in December 2008 on a Dnipropetrovsk female student who shortly afterwards died.

Serhiy Dovhal believes that this is one of three cases which were falsified during the pre-trial investigation.
