German Chancellor expresses concern over trials of former government members

In a telephone call to President Yanukovych Angela Merkel stressed that in the course of free parliamentary elections the possibility must be ensured for full political competition and called for criminal law to not be abused through its use against political opponents.

 

During a telephone conversation with President Yanukovych, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed concern over the court proceedings against former members of Yulia Tymoshenko’s government. 

An official spokesperson for the federal government in Berlin confirmed to Deutsche Welle that such a call had taken place. “During the conversation she expressed concern expressed concern over the court proceedings against former members of Yulia Tymoshenko’s government and against Yulia Tymoshenko herself.”

The Chancellor stressed that in the course of free parliamentary elections the possibility must be ensured for full political competition and called for criminal law to not be abused through its use against political opponents.

The spokesperson added that Ms Merkel had emphasised that the EU has a single view regarding the principles of a law-based state, democracy and protection of human rights. Therefore any move closer to the EU can only take place on condition that these values are upheld.
