Prosecutor puts stop to entry fee for cemeteries

17.02.2009

Following another, shall we say, controversial innovation in Kyiv, by which a fee was charged to people visiting cemeteries, the Kyiv Prosecutor has carried out a check and cancelled the new system.

The Prosecutor’s Office informs that on 23 January the relevant municipal enterprise issued an order imposing a charge for entering a cemetery of 10 UAH (an amount which in terms of people’s earnings, is not in the least symbolic). The charge was payable by all not directly involved in a funeral.

On 4 February the Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office appealed against the order, and by 12 February it had been cancelled.

Charges were also introduced recently on various funeral and burial services, and these have thus far not been revoked.
