The Deputy Prosecutor General rejects claims that his department is stalling the investigation and asserts that the problem is Mykola Melnychenko’s refusal to hand over the originals of his secret tapes of of Leonid Kuchma’s conversations.

The Prosecutor General’s Office says that it is still trying to find those who ordered the killing of Georgy Gongadze, but complains of obstructions.

The Deputy Prosecutor General Serhiy Holomsha, during a meeting with journalists, rejected claims that his department was stalling the investigation and said that the main delay was in the refusal of former Presidential guard Mykola Melnychenko to hand over the originals of his secret tapes of the conversations Leonid Kuchma had.

The publication almost 8 years ago of a part of the recordings gave rise to suspicions that leading public officials had been implicated in the journalist’s abduction and murder.

Mykola Melnychenko is refusing to hand over all his records, saying that he does not trust the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Last month three men, all former police officers, were convicted of carrying out the murder of Georgy Gongadze.
