On Belarusian Solidarity Day the demonstrators carried pictures of political prisoners and of those who have disappeared without trace under Lukashenko’s rule

On Sunday 16 July 2006,  30 people taking part in a protest outside the Russian Embassy in Minsk were detained.

The protesters were demanding that Moscow stop supporting the Belarusian President, Aleksandr Lukashenko, the news agency Reuter reports.

Among those detained was one of the leaders of the Belarusian opposition, Anatoly Lebedko.

The demonstrators were holding portraits of political prisoners and opponents of Lukashenko who have disappeared without trace over the 12 years of his rule.

The police confiscated the portraits.
